LED is an integral part of our facials. If it's not in yours, it should be. The numerous benefits that almost anyone can enjoy make this modality a no-brainer.
But how many times has your client asked you what LED does? Or maybe a more scientific question, and you hesitate, because - well, you just aren't sure?
LED is short for Light Emitting Diode. Nasa originally developed it for plant growth experiments, and soon after, realized it's wound healing capabilities.
Unlike other types of light, LED does not contain UV rays. Therefore, it won't cause burns, and is safe for regular use.
LED uses color wavelengths of visible light to treat everything from acne to aging skin by increasing collagen production
Our skin uses the light as a source of energy to kill acne causing bacteria, fuel the repair of damaged cells, and to rejuvenate the skin. The energy stimulates collagen and elastin production, and aids in tissue repair.
The Benefits of Each Color
Best known for treating acne, but did you know blue light also has a host of other benefits?
There are so many great things about blue LED, including it's anti-inflammatory properties, its ability to regulate oil glands, and it's also a UV-Free alternative for the treatment of eczema.
When treating acne, blue light may not work for everyone. The acne causing bacteria must be P. acnes, which is photosensitive to blue wavelengths of light. Sometimes it can take several treatments to figure out if blue light therapy is effective. That's not to say you shouldn't try, because there are still a host of benefits using blue LED.
Red light is bioactive and has the ability to reach below the dermis layer. It's in the subcutaneous fatty layer where it then promotes cellular repair, increases circulation, and stimulates collagen production.
In addition, similar to Blue LED, it has also been shown to improve acne by it's ability to reduce inflammation and heal.
Tip: Red light is a great addition to treating your clients with Rosacea, and has actually been medically-approved for treatment.
Although Green isn't as popular as Red and Blue, the calming benefits of green light therapy shouldn't be underestimated.
Green LED has been shown to improve dilated capillaries, under eye circles, and hyperpigmentation.
It is also a great alternative to it's counterparts for clients who suffer from headaches as it potentially reduces photophobia (light sensitivity).
Yellow LED has a shallow penetration level, making it an effective treatment for redness. Upon penetration it stimulates the production of red blood cells and alters biological pathways to improve the appearance of skin.
Yellow light is absorbed by keratinocytes, melanocytes, as well as Merkel and Langerhans cells, which help maintain the health of the epidermis. It also has the ability to improve lymphatic flow, which removes toxins from the skin.
HOW TO USE LED
We recommend using LED at the end of the facial on clean dry skin, unless a treatment you're using specifically requires light to activate it, like the Omega Green. Using LED over masks can also increase product penetration. This is because skin is more permeable when warm.
